Art

I like looking at pieces of art. I also like to create my own. Paintings, watercolor or acrylic, are my favorite. I like what I paint, I hang it up. I tell people I did that painting. They are pretty good, but nothing spectacular, at least in my opinion. What I dont understand is this art that looks like a five year old took a brush to a canvas. I know it is a style, I realize it is an expression. I understand that there is a lot of thought and creativity put into each piece, but at what point do you overthink your work so much, that it becomes so simplistic that a child could attain the same goal. And to put a huge price tag on it- but that is another subject

I hear ya... even after all those years of art school (which included a ton of art history courses), there were still many "works of art" that left me with one thought in my head, and that was "Huh??" But of course, the way I learned about art history was through genres and movements, and when things are categorized that way it's a little bit easier to figure out the artists' intentions, be it abstract expressionism or the markings of a 5 year old child.

I did study Art History, but admittedly, I really only paid attention to the artists that had styles that interested me. Maybe my tastes have changed, but I am a bit more interested in the abstract now. To charge prices of $3000.00 or more for an essentially blank canvas with "cookie cutter" cutouts of trees and animals, with maybe a sense of a background is ludicrous. Not as ludicrous as paying for that "kids collage" but ludicrous nontheless. I'm convinced that people who have money will spend it on anything.

Hehe, they'd pay that much just so they can say they have a "So and So" hanging in their living room. Reminds me of a friend of mine. She took a big canvas, painted it green and hung it in her foyer. Looks great!

I was the same way when I took my art history classes. Which is why I nearly failed the Ancient Mesopotamia - Early Ancient Greek class. After a while, all the vases and busts with missing noses looked the same to me.
