I went to a “Black Tie” affair this past Saturday. I went with a beautiful woman, who looked absolutely stunning, and was the perfect companion. I’ve already thanked her, but felt like thanking her again. SO THANK YOU FOR A WONDERFUL EVENING. I couldn’t have had a better time.
That isn’t the only thing that I want to write about. I (I’m sure it was we, but I can only speak for myself) noticed a distinct lack of manners on the part of most of the people who attended this event. Not that I am the picture perfect dinner guest or the person with the most etiquette in the entire world, but this was really obvious. Stuff like talking with your mouth full, being drunk enough that you look drunk (nobody fell on the floor that I saw), being a glutton, and people who were just obnoxious.
You see things in movies or read about past aristocracy, and you wonder if that is a true depiction or have people just lost their social graces. I honestly don’t know. I seriously brushed up on my tuxedo and dinner etiquette before I attended this thing. You know I verified it on the web, jacket on or off, buttoned unbuttoned, long tie, bowtie, shoes, which fork you use.
You know what? None of that mattered. Made no difference. Dancing was like attending free skate in the middle of a hockey practice (I’ll take those lessons). I feel like I should have taped my ankle before venturing out there. Maybe it is just me, but I thought that common courtesy is a must. We had to cross the street to get to the event. Do you think that any of the people who were driving to this same event (because they were dressed for it at least) would have let us cross the street in front of them? No of course not. I guess I’ve just come to the conclusion that the people who were driving were just rude pricks and they made up at least 50% of the party.
